Small Adam's Peak (A train travel from Badulla to Small Adam's Peak in Ella)

Small Adam's Peak, which is also known as Punchi Sri Pada in Sinhala, is situated in Ella, Badulla. Here's our train experience from Badulla to Small Adam's Peak.

Train Trip

Badulla Station

It was around 8.30 O’clock when we gathered at Badulla Bus stand to begin our trip to Ella. Instead of travelling by bus we choose to use the Train. So we walked to Badulla Rail Station   and it was already 8.45 once we reached there.  Train “Podimanike” was waiting to take off.

crowded 3rd class

Train took off at 8.50, 2nd class tickets cost Rs.40 while 3rd class tickets were cheap as Rs.20 (From Badulla to Ella).  But third class section was crowded as it is always. I don’t recommend  3rd class unless you ran out of money.  But the second class section was almost empty. But we had no idea to take seats as we were very comfortable at the Foot board.

The train from Badulla is always fantastic and that’s why it is considered as one of the most picturesque train travels one could ever experience. Giant mountain range covered in mild mist is something you must experience.

Once the train reached Demodara ( a town in the hill country)  We saw this magnificent masterpiece of “Nine arcs” bridge. [We plan to write an article on nine arcs in the near future] As one could understand it consists of nine arcs and has a nice background story for how it was built.

A few local boys whom we saw in the train made huge noises (Shouting “Hooo”) whenever we went through a “bingeya”. Don’t worry it’s not annoying , Shouting in tunnels  is a common thing you’d experience in Badulla- Colombo train where you find a bunch of such rail tunnels.

By 9.50 Am we came to Ella, So we had to say good bye to the train "Podi Manike". [Train time from Badulla to Ella is exactly  two hours, but if u go all the way to Colombo, it'll take about eleven hours. But don't worry because most of the passengers travel to Colombo and they never complaint it's too long]

Form Ella to Small Adam's Peak

We walked five minutes until we found the junction where the road to “Small adam’s peak” begins. On the same place we saw this notice board saying its just 1.3km far from the junction. So we decided to take a walk.  [Never thought a notice board would lie]

But the notice was wrong, We walked about 5km ( about 1 hour) to Small Adam's peak. For our sake Ella has a cool temperature which helped us by making sure our sweat glands were closed.

From the mountain top

If you are not a walker, then pick a bus from the junction. But many tourists take a walk to the destination.

Small Adam’s peak is not tall as the Original Adam’s peak. It didn’t take us 20 minutes to climb up, but how can I explain the scenery we saw after reaching the top of the mountain? See it for yourself. Really wonderful!

Small Adam's Peak is also known as Punchi Sripada
