It's believed that Buddha has visited Muthiyangana back in the 5th century BC, on his great's third visit to Sri Lanka.

Nobody forgets to worship Muthiyangana if they visit reach Badulla town. Muthiyangana is considered as one of the "Solosmasthana" (16 sacred places) temples.






 The stupa enshrines Lord Buddha's hair and mukthaka dathu ( His sweat turned in to pearls) for thousands of years and in Poya days Muthiyangana temple is pleasantly crowded as in the picture.





Historical importance 


Mahiyangana,Naadeepa,Kelaniya,Sri Paadha(Adam's peak),Diwa Guhawa, Deegawapiya, Muthiyanganaya,Thissamaharamaya,Sri Maha Bodhi,Mirisawatiya,Swarnamaali pagoda,Thuparamaya, Abhayagiriya,Chethawanaya,Sela Chethiya,& Katharagama" are the 16 most sacred buddhist religious places in sri lanka known as "solosmasthana".



It is believed that the Lord Buddha had visited the above places during his 3rd arrval to sri lanka with the company of 500 enlighten monks. Historians say that the lord Bhuddha had stayed a while in those places practicing meditation. 

When Buddha visited Badulla, God Indika  requeseted a holy relic from lord Buddha to build a temple in this area. And later, king Dewanampiyatissa constructed the Muthiyangana Pagoda and enshrined the relics in relic chamber.



  • Muthiyangana Temple is also called as – "Muth galu wehera"and "Badulu  wehera"

Features of Muthiyangana temple


When we  enter Muthiyangana Temple, first  we see the Entrance gateMuthiyangana thorana” which is a great art work that consists a lot of craft works. there are two such entrance gates In Muthiyangana Temple… 






Muthiyangana Maha Vihara ( Main shrine room) – The "Makara thorana"(the entrance of main shrine house) is a remarkable art work.. through that we enter to the shrine room.. there are large Bhuddha statues and statue of god Indika(the god who protects the Muthiyangana Temple) 








Then the Muthiyngana pagoda –This is the only pagoda in sri lanka that has a  golden fence aroud the pagoda..it’s  belived that the holy Hair relic and the Pearl relic(it’s belived that lord Buddha's sweat turned in to pearl  here) enshrined in the pagoda.







Sath sathi vihara: Shrine room consist with statues of lord Buddha’s representing his 1st 7 weeks after enlighten   




The main Bhodhi Tree

 After the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi brought to Sri lanka from India,it was planted in Anuradhapura,sri lanka.. after that the 1st 32 buds of that bodhi was distributed around the sri lanka.. the bodhi tree that in Muthiyangana Temple  also has a bud of that 32 buds of Jaya sri maha Bodhi…








And another important Bodhi Tree in Muthiyangana is "Maliyadewa Bodhi.."it says that an en lighted monk named "Maliyadewa" visited Muthiyangana and preached “chachakka suttra” to his 60 student monks,and all of them were enlighted at the end of the sermon. To remind that incident, a Bodhi was planted on that place.
